COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- The city leaders in Cottage Grove say an employee has been fired as a result of an embezzlement investigation.
The city manager, mayor and council president held a news conference Monday to announce the action. The Eugene Register-Guard reports the name of the employee and the sum of money weren't disclosed.
City Manager Richard Meyers says it will take "tedious" computer work to determine the scope of the crime.
The Eugene Police Department, Lane County district attorney's office and State Police are investigating.
Meyers said the worker used a loophole in computer software to get access to utility funds the city handles.
Cottage Grove is south of Eugene along Interstate 5 and has a population of nearly 10,000.
