PORTLAND, Ore. -- The U.S. House voted on Monday to rename a Northeast Portland post office for the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Renaming the post office at 630 NE Killingsworth Ave. for Dr. King has been an effort nearly three years in the making, when Rep. Earl Blumenauer first proposed the change in 2007.
Postal letter carriers Jamie Partridge and Isham Harris proposed the name change on behalf of Northeast Portland postal service employees and residents of the Piedmont, Concordia and Sabin communities, according to Erin Allweiss, a spokesperson for Rep. Blumenauer.
A companion bill in the U.S. Senate, sponsored by Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, passed. President Barack Obama must sign the bill to rename the Killingsworth location as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Post Office before the change is official.
Allweiss said every member of the Oregon House delegation supported the Blumenauer bill, which failed to pass during the last Congressional session.
