Portland finished the "meteorological" summer of June, July and August as the coldest in 17 years, according to Steve Pierce, V.P. of the Oregon Meteorological Society.
For the first time in 35 years, Portland recorded three consecutive summer months of below-average temperatures, said Pierce.
"In fact, Portland has now been below average for five back-to-back months, beginning in April and continuing through August," said Pierce.
The 'non-summer' of 2010 was almost an exact opposite to the summer of 2009, which Pierce says was the warmest on record at Portland International Airport.
"Summer 2010 will also be known as the summer that featured large temperature swings from one extreme to another, along with morning low clouds that persisted longer than normal," said Pierce.
Among the dubious records set during the summer of 2010: the single wettest June on record, and the latest date on record to reach a high of 80 (June 11).
