PORTLAND -- Cleveland High School elected its first same-sex couple to homecoming court.

The Cleveland Clarion reported Oct 21 that lesbian couple Laurel Osborne and Sophia Schoenfeld were elected senior class homecoming 'princess and princess.'

The paper stated the event was not controversial for students or faculty. The article explained "the senior class simply recognized two of their friends who were dating by voting for them as part of the homecoming court."

Co-Student Body President Antonia Washington told the Clarion “a lot of places wouldn't be OK with it," but that, "it's awesome that the Cleveland student body has such an open mind."
