CLACKAMAS, Ore. -- Clackamas County high school students have a chance to create their own professional commercial about safe driving.
The Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office is hosting a contest called “Teen Triple Threat” where students compete for the spotlight.
Organizers said anyone wanting to take part in the contest should write a script based on the three main risk factors: speed, distracted driving and driving under the influence.
Or they can focus on the three main prevention strategies: wearing seat belts, sharing the road and maintaining a proper distance between vehicles.
The commercial spots must be 60 seconds long and the winning script will be professionally produced.
“Students are encouraged to use their own stories and references to share their message,” said to Patty McMillan, Safe Communities Program Coordinator.
"Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teens aged 15 to 19 years. No other hazard or behavior comes close to claiming as many teen lives as driving,” McMillan added.
The contest runs from November 16, 2009 to March 16, 2010. Entries will be judged on creativity, message impact, and promotional appeal. Specific contest rules can be found on the Safe Communities Web site, which also features sample scripts, helpful links, and articles to get teens thinking about safe driving.
