PORTLAND – The Portland City Council has asked the Food and Drug Administration to allow blood donations from men who have had sex with men.
The FDA has banned the blood for decades, claiming that it was necessary in order to reduce the risk of spreading HIV. But commissioners believe it’s discriminatory.
The council approved a resolution Wednesday, but it is purely symbolic.
Earlier this summer, people in favor of the change held a blood drive and counted the number of men who couldn't donate.
