GRANTS PASS, Ore. -- A 30-year-old transient has been arraigned on charges of manslaughter, assault and illegal possession of a machine gun in the shooting death of a 5-year-old girl in Southern Oregon.

Police say Jon Andrew Meyer Jr. was in a downstairs room of an apartment in Grants Pass on Thursday night when an assault rifle went off, hitting the girl and a woman in an upstairs room of the same apartment.

Police say the woman was shot in the torso and taken to the local hospital.

Authorities say Meyer entered no pleas in Josephine County Circuit Court in Grants Pass on Friday, and was held on $250,000 bail.

The court document charging Meyer names the girl as Alyssa Bobbit and the 44-year-old woman who was wounded as Karen Hancock.
