PORTLAND -- The former sales director of a Portland cemetery has been accused of selling grave sites that were not actually available, police said.
Police first responded to the report of a theft at the Finley Sunset Hills Cemetery in August, according to Sgt. Vance Stimler of the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The report accused a former employee in the theft.
Investigators found that former manager and sales director Michael Swartz had fraudulently sold plots had already been sold--or were otherwise unavailable--for personal gain, Stimler said.
Swartz was arrested Tuesday and indicted for aggravated theft. He has posted bail and is expected to be in court November 13.
"All plots sold by Mr. Swartz have been honored by Finley Sunset Hills Cemetery with an alternate plot location," Stimler said.
