REDMOND, Ore. -- A 13-year-old boy was rescued Thursday morning at Smith Rock, the popular hiking and climbing area in Central Oregon, after he was hit in the head with a rock.

The boy was struck  just off of the Misery Ridge Trail in Smith Rock State Park. His 16-year-old friend called 911 for help.

Crews used "low angle rescue techniques" to reach the boy and safely get him out of the area, according to Sgt. Ronny Dozier with the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office.

He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. No further details have been released about his condition.
