PORTLAND – Authorities identified the man Saturday who was found dead at the bottom of Ecola Falls in the Columbia Gorge.

A hiker discovered the body of Douglas Fry, 63, of Hood River Friday. Authorities were investigating the manner and cause of death.

The hiker called deputies after finding some items on the edge of the Larch Mountain Trail and was concerned someone had fallen, said Lt. Steve Alexander of the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office.

The hiker then spotted Fry's body in a creek near Ecola Falls, a 55-foot waterfall. Deputies recovered the body from the creek and Portland Mountain Rescue was called to help bring the body back to the trail.

Officials said Fry likely fell off the trail.
