OREGON CITY, Ore. -- A good Samaritan turned in a trailer stolen from a Bethany Boy Scouts troop after he saw it on Craigslist.

A cargo trailer and thousands of dollars in camping equipment was stolen from Boy Scout Troop 597 early Sunday morning.

A man saw the trailer listed on Craigslist Sunday, went to see it in a parking lot and got suspicious when the seller offered to sell it far too cheaply. The man called police who arrived quickly on the scene.  While the suspect got away, the trailer was recovered and returned to the scouts.

The man spoke with KGW and said he knew the item must have been stolen.

"To learn it was a boy scouts trailer, which is awesome to get back to them, because I know it's not a cheap trailer.  They probably worked really hard to get that trailer too," said the man who preferred to remain anonymous. "I'm glad they got it back."

While the the troop lost their equipment the troop is glad they got their trailer back.

"[He's an] Honorable guy- that's some of the values of scouting." said troop father dad George Risenmay. "Maybe he's a scout himself."

But the troop still needs camping gear.

“Every year we have a fundraiser and lots of that money goes to getting new equipment. So the work that we put forward into it is gone now, so it's sort of a bummer,” said Eagle Scout Nathan Henstrom.

The troop has a camping trip planned for next weekend and is hoping it can borrow enough gear to make that trip happen.

Anyone was information about the theft, was asked to call the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office. Those wanting to help Troop 597 can contact Chelsea Adams at chels.adams@gmail.com
