PORTLAND -- Francis Bacon's "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" went up at the Portland Art Museum Friday.
The series of related paintings sold for more than $142 million this year, making it the most expensive painting ever sold at auction.
It’s the first time the work has been in a public museum in more than a decade.
"It's the moment in the holidays when you take a break and you discover something you didn't know or didn't care about that suddenly you do,” said chief curator at Portland Art Museum Bruce Guenther.
The museum isn’t revealing the name of the collector who bought the art. It only said the person lives on the west coast.
The paintings will show through March as part of the Portland masterworks series.
