FLORENCE, Ore. – A 69-year-old pilot was killed and his teen grandson was still missing Monday after a small plane crashed near Florence Sunday morning, according to the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

Richard Munger, of Florence, was flying the single-engine plane when it crashed around 500 yards off the shore just before 10 a.m., said Carrie Carver of the Lane County Sheriff’s Office.

His 15-year-old grandson, Benjamin Dressler, was a passenger in the plane.

The Coast Guard found Munger dead Sunday. First responders were still searching for Dressler Monday afternoon.

The North Jetty, near where the plane crashed, was closed to the public during the initial search. It reopened Monday, Carver said.
