PORTLAND – A man was arrested for assault after police found an unconscious 2-year-old boy with suspicious injuries in his hotel room.

Police arrived at the Unicorn Motel on Southeast 82nd Avenue at approximately 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and found the injured boy unconscious inside, police said.

One officer performed CPR until medical teams arrived. The boy was then taken to the hospital.

Joshua Howard, 28, of Astoria, had called 911 and was the boyfriend of the child’s mother. He was arrested and charged with first degree assault, according to police.

The child remained in critical condition at the hospital Thursday with life-threatening injuries. The Portland Police Family Services Division and Homicide Detail have been called in to investigate, police said.

Howard was arraigned Thursday in Multnomah County Court and charged with four counts: attempted aggravated murder, attempted murder, assault and criminal mistreatment.

Anyone with information was asked to contact Detective Tom Walker at (503) 823-0254, thomas.walker@portlandoregon.gov or, Detective Mark Sponhauer at (503) 823-0416 mark.sponhauer@portlandoregon.gov
