SALEM -- A Salem clothing boutique owner became a crime stopper Wednesday afternoon when a man tried to return items purchased by a loyal customer.

Shannon Williams, owner of the Bittersweet Boutique on Court Street Northeast, was keeping an eye out for specific merchandise after her customer contacted her to let her know her car had been broken into on Saturday, and her recent purchases stolen.

When a man brought the items in Wednesday afternoon to try and get a refund, Williams recognized the clothing and called Salem police. Officers nearby responded right away and found the suspect near the store. Williams was able to identify the man as the same who tried to return the stolen items.

Salem Police say 33-year-old William Dale Ryan was arrested and charged with theft and unauthorized entry into a motor vehicle.

The customer now has her stolen items back.
