PORTLAND -- An estimated 19,000 cyclists and pedestrians took over Portland's Willamette River bridges Sunday for the 17th Providence Bridge Pedal.

Bridge Pedal gives riders unimpeded access to the ten bridges, most of which were closed to drivers in at least one direction Sunday morning. Even the Interstate 5 construction that has caused some recent weekend delays was postponed during the annual event.

An exact count was not available, due to a high number of Sunday morning registrations, but organizers estimate about 19,000 people took part in Bridge Pedal's various rides and walks, according to Providence spokeswoman Jean Powell Marks.
