ALBANY, Ore. -- An 8-year-old boy died and his 13-year-old brother was seriously hurt in single vehicle rollover crash along Interstate 5 in the Albany area Sunday night, police said.
There were six family members in the Dodge Durango when it crashed just before 7 p.m. It was traveling northbound on I-5 when it surged into the center median and then rolled several times.
Police said it was unclear why the SUV suddenly veered out of its lane and they were investigating whether a tire malfunction may have been a factor in the deadly crash.
Yonic Guzman-Cruz was ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene, police said. His 13-year-old brother Mateo was transported to Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center in Corvallis with serious injuries.
The boys' father, Willevaldo Guzman-Cruz, 53, was driving the SUV. He suffered minor injuries, along with their mother, Evangelica Guzman-Cruz, 37; and two other brothers, ages 15 and 17. They were all treated at the scene and did not require hospitalization.
The southbound lanes of I-5 were blocked for about three hours during the crash investigation and a detour was set up.
