MADRAS, Ore. -- A 7-year-old Madras boy was killed Wednesday when he was hit by a car while walking across a street, police said.

Just before 8 a.m. officers responded to the report of a pedestrian hit near the intersection of 5th Street and D Street, according to Judy Throop with the Madras Police Dept.

Investigators concluded that Austin Hollenbeack-Hatch was had "darted across the street, in the crosswalk" and was hit by a vehicle turning from D Street, Throop said.

"Police have determined that the pedestrian had a walk sign, the driver had a green light and the morning sun was a factor in the collision," Throop added.

The child was taken to Mountain View Hospital, where he was pronounced dead and his parents were notified.

The driver, Dennis Kluser, 64, of Madras, cooperated with police.  He was cited for careless driving and failure to yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalk.
