GRESHAM, Ore -- You know him as the confident owner of Robert's Roofing Service, but in the matter of minutes Robert Swain lost that swagger.

"I am so upset," said Swain.  "I've been in tears all day."

Swain returned home to his Gresham condominium around 7:30 Thursday night.  He found his front door chiseled open and his home ransacked.

"My jewelry box was open and every one of my drawers were pulled out on the floor and emptied," said Swain.

The roofing contractor said the suspect or suspects stole about $400,000 in jewelry.  Gone was everything from gold bracelets laced with diamonds to Rolex watches.

"The reason why I had it here is because I don't believe in banks," said Swain.  "I don't believe in safety deposit boxes."

Swain said the hundreds of thousands of dollars in jewelry was not insured.

"I just didn't think anyone would do this to me here," added Swain.  "It's gone for good."

So, too, is Swain's sense of security. In light of the incident Swain nailed shut his front door.

"I'm so sick and violated here because there are more things that could be stolen out of my home," he said.

Anyone with information about the case was urged to call the Gresham Police Department. Swain offered a $5,000 cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
