CANBY, Ore. -- A driver trying to elude officers after a Canby traffic stop was finally caught 30 miles away when his Audi A4 hit a power pole, police said.

An officer attempted to pull over the 43-year-old driver as he was headed southbound on Highway 99E just after 1 a.m. Thursday, according to Oregon State Police.

The driver reportedly reached speeds of up to 80 mph as he raced through Hubbard, Woodburn and Gervais.

Gervais police threw out spike strips at Highway 99E and Brooklake Road Northeast to disable the car, OSP reported. The driver continued for a short distance and crashed into a utility pole near Nevada Street, knocking out power for nearby residents.

He attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly taken into custody and arrested.

The highway was temporarily closed while utility crews responded and restored electricity.
