HOOD RIVER, Ore. – Three people were injured Friday after a wrong-way DUII driver caused a head-on crash on Interstate 84, police said.
Around 8:30 p.m., 78-year-old Leonard Gilbert was driving east in the westbound lanes of the interstate near Hood River when 28-year-old Emily Smith of Spokane saw him and swerved to the right.
Gilbert hit the left corner of Smith’s Ford Escape and then collided head on with a Toyota with two people inside, said Lt. Gregg Hastings with Oregon State Police.
Gilbert was taken to the hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries.
Chelsea Ziegler, 21, and Samuel Lowe, 21, both of Camas, Wash. were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Smith was not injured, Hastings said.
Gilbert was cited at the hospital for DUII, reckless driving, recklessly endangering another person, assault and failure to perform the duties of a driver.
