BEAVERTON, Ore. -- Four people were arrested at a Beaverton home for animal abuse after neighbors saw them beating dogs with a hammer and a shovel, police said.
"Apparently one of the owners had a shovel, and another owner had a hammer that they were at the time using to assault the dogs," said officer Mike Rowe with the Beaverton Police Department. "They’re very nice dogs. Just obviously there’s been some issues... When a neighbor calls in, saying they’re witnessing a dog being hit with a shovel, that’s not acceptable."

Ten dogs were seized at the home, located in the 11700 block of Southwest 11th Street. Six of the animals were taken to Washington County Animal Services and the four others are now in the care of the Oregon Humane Society.
Meantime, officials said the dogs will be available for adoption Friday. All of the dogs have had a physical exam, been spayed/neutered, and have received initial vaccinations. Shelter officials said they will come with a microchip ID and many other extras.
Three men and a woman were taken into custody and charged with animal abuse and animal neglect. The men also face additional charges for threatening neighbors who were telling them to stop hurting the dogs, Rowe said.
The suspects were later identified as Carl Crosswhite Jr., 43; Stanford Evans, 59; Steven Young, 36, and Darlene Exendine, 48.
