SALEM -- The man who drowned Tuesday afternoon at a popular swimming hole on Butte Creek was identified Thursday, according to police.

Police were called to Scotts Mills Park at about 5:45 p.m.

Ralph Johnson III was reportedly swimming with a friend, began struggling against the current, and drowned. CPR was performed by first responders but they were unable to resuscitate him.

Johnson is from the New York area but had recently been living in Portland, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

It was the second drowning in two days in Marion County, deputies said.

The sheriff's office encouraged people to know their swimming skill, always swim with a buddy, and have an approved flotation device nearby at all times while swimming.
