COLUMBUS, GA -- A Georgia man said he went inside a burning home to recover his beer.

Walter Serpit went back in his burning house, "like a dummy," to rescue his Bud Light, after his family had gotten out safely, Serpit said.

KTRK-TV reports eight people, including two children, were in the home watching TV when the flames broke out.

Serpit, who walks with a cane, went back in and saved several cans of beer.

Serpit admits he is an alcoholic.

"I told them to get the kids out and everything, and me myself, being an alcoholic, I was trying to get my beer out," he told KTR-K-TV. "You feel me?"

A newly installed water heater is blamed for starting the fire.
