PORTLAND -- The 2013 Homeless Street Count is underway in Multnomah County, and organizers expect to see higher numbers this year than in years past.
City and county leaders joined representatives of the homeless community for a meeting Thursday in Portland.
“It lets people know the true numbers. I think what is understated in the homeless population is the mental problems, mental health problems,” said Kevin, who also used to be homeless himself.
The Street Count is done every two years and is required for the county to maintain federal funding.
The last report done in 2011 showed roughly 15,000 homeless people living in Multnomah County.
