NEWPORT, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say an unloaded logging truck hit and killed two elk on Highway 101 Thursday on the coast near Newport.
Troopers say one of the elk became lodged under the steering axle which caused the driver to lose control. The truck skidded 180 feet and rolled on its side down a small embankment.
The driver was not injured. But, about 50 gallons of diesel leaked from a tank. The fuel was contained by Yachats firefighters and cleaned up by the Oregon Department of Transportation and Northwest Hazmat responders
Trooper Dan Swift says there was no environmental damage.
Highway 101 was closed about four hours.
