PENDLETON, Ore. (AP) — State transportation officials say Oregon is experimenting with rock salt as a highway de-icer.
But officials say they're not considering salting Interstate 84, where nine people died in a tour bus crash last month.
Oregon doesn't use salt on the roads because it rusts bridges and vehicles and because of concerns over pollution.
The East Oregonian reports (http://bit.ly/WEbK6u) that most neighboring states do. Idaho, Nevada and California use rock salt across the state. Washington uses salt in some cities, such as Spokane.
After numerous wrecks involving cars driving in from salting states, Oregon is testing salt on Interstate 5 near the California border and on U.S. 95 as it cuts through Southern Oregon between Nevada and Idaho.
