PORTLAND -- A Salvation Army bell ringer in Portland got a nice holiday surprise Friday when someone dropped a gold Krugerrand into a kettle.

The value of the coin was estimated at more than $1,700. It was dropped in a kettle outside Downtown Portland's Pioneer Place Mall Friday and discovered Saturday by staff and volunteers.

"This is enough to provide over 60 families who are in need with an emergency food box, supply Christmas gifts for dozens of kids, or send several kids to camp for a week next summer," said Lt. Ray Dihle of the Salvation Army Portland Tabernacle.

Donations have been lower than anticipated this year, and gifts like this help keep the Salvation Army's doors open for the holiday season and throughout the rest of the year, Dihle said.
