PORTLAND -- A man died and a mother and 4-year-old child were evacuated after fire broke out early Friday morning at a Southeast Portland apartment.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews were dispatched about 3:10 a.m. to 2530 SE 12th Avenue. Arriving firefighters found heavy smoke coming from an upstairs unit, said Portland Fire & Rescue Lt. Rich Chatman.

The body of a 50-year-old man was found in a hallway outside his upstairs apartment, where investigators believe the fire started.

The mother and child were in an apartment below his.

The Red Cross was assisting nine adults and two children displaced by the damage.

The cause remained under investigation.
