PORTLAND -- The driver involved in a fatal crash earlier this month is now in jail.
One person died and three people were taken to the hospital with traumatic injuries following the collision in North Portland on January 9.
The driver, 39-year-old Eleno Guillen, was released from the hospital Monday and charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless driving and DUII.
Emergency crews were dispatched at about 6:30 a.m. to North Argyle Way and Columbia Boulevard. Investigators said the driver of a pickup truck lost control, went down an embankment and struck a telephone pole.
One of the passengers, 39-year-old Adan Gonzalez of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Guillen of Gardner, Texas, and two others were hospitalized without life-threatening injuries.
"Investigators believe alcohol was a factor and will forward the reports to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office for possible criminal charges," said Portland Police Sgt. Pete Simpson.
It was Portland's first traffic fatality of 2013.
