STEVENSON -- A Portland woman died Saturday afternoon in a kayaking mishap on the Little White Salmon River.

Dispatchers learned about 3 p.m. via a satellite phone call that Jennifer Watson, 38, was receiving CPR after her kayak had overturned, said Skamania County Undersheriff Dave Cox.

She was pronounced dead about three hours later. A high-angle team from Wind River Search and Rescue, and the Clark County Technical Rescue Team were sent to retrieve her body in rugged terrain and steep cliffs.

Watson was an experienced kayaker and was with a group of 10, Cox said. It was reportedly her first time on the river.

“The Little White Salmon River is a very technical river for white water enthusiasts”, he said. “This is a very unfortunate incident and our condolences go out to Watson’s friends and family.”

Her death was one of three kayak mishaps over the weekend.
