HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Hillsboro police shot and wounded a man after responding to reports that his girlfriend was being beaten and that a neighbor who tried to help her had been stabbed Thursday night.

Officers were dispatched about 11:30 p.m. to the 2000 block of Northeast Barberry Drive to find the suspect in an apartment unit, said Lt. Michael Rouches.

Police told the man to drop the knife he was holding. He refused and an officer fired a Taser at him. He was ordered again to drop the knife, but he refused and moved toward the officers.

An officer fired two rounds, striking the man. No officers were hurt. Though he had been shot, the man continued to be agitated even as he was placed on a gurney and taken to an ambulance, Rouches told KGW.

The suspect was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery for a gunshot wound to the torso. He was expected to survive.

His girlfriend was taken to the hospital and treated for injuries to her face. The neighbor was treated and released for a knife wound to his leg.

The name of the suspect was not available.
