Police shoot pit bull that killed 2 other dogs in SE Portland
02:57 PM PST on Tuesday, November 25, 2008
PORTLAND -- An aggressive pit bull that police said jumped into a back yard and killed two other dogs was shot and killed by a Portland police officer Monday night.
Police spokesperson Brian Schmautz said Southeast precinct officers were called out to the 8100 block of SE 72nd Ave. around 8:15 after a report that two pit bulls got into the yard of a home and were attacking three other dogs.
The officers arrived to find one of the three dogs in the yard already dead. Schmautz said the two pit bulls were still attacking the remaining two dogs when police arrived but quickly turned their attention to the officers.
At least one of the dogs reportedly charged the officers. Schmautz said that dog was shot and killed before it reached the officer. The other pit bull ran off.
Police said one of the two remaining dogs died at the scene. The other was also injured.
Multnomah County Animal control was out trying to find the pit bull that took off.
The owners of the dogs that were attacked said they heard the barking and thought someone was breaking in to a home. But when they got outside one of their pets, a Pomeranian, was already dead.
Another was in surgery Tuesday.
Investigators have not found the owners of the pit bulls.
Schmautz said the police bureau will review the officer's use of force to determine if it was within policy.
This was the third violent incident involving pit bulls in the Portland Metro area in less than a week. A Vancouver girl had to get stitches after a neighbor's pit bull bit her in the face a few days ago. And earlier this week, a Happy Valley girl was attacked while playing in a back yard and her dad had to fight off the dog to rescue her.
