Car wash business up as slushy streets sully vehicles

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Slushy, grimy roads are creating long lines at area car washes.
One car wash in northeast Portland said Sunday was the busiest day of 2008, with more than 1,000 customers -- more than three times the business of a normal Sunday.
Winter is typically busier than summer for car washes, the manager said, because no one wants to wash their own vehicle in the cold and rain.
Appointments were almost necessary as people began digging out of record snow falls.

Mike McClasky lined up for a wash and said a dirty car was unacceptable.
"If I start my week with a clean car I feel much better," he said.
Lines were expected to be long the rest of the week.
