PORTLAND -- The continued heavy snowfall mixed with rain and freezing rain has been too much for some people's roofs and trees to handle, causing some to collapse and fall.
A carport collapsed onto a six-year-old girl at SE Hearthwood Drive in Clackamas Monday. Neighbors helped lift the roof of the carport off the little girl and paramedics were called to the scene but amazingly, she only had a few bruises.
A large tree weighed down by snow and ice fell onto a house on Highland Avenue in Northeast Salem, causing damage to the roof. No one was injured.
At the Tall Oaks apartments in McMinnville, four carports collapsed onto parked cars below. No one was injured. In Newberg, at the Nut Tree Mobile Home Estates, a carport collapsed on a woman, breaking her leg.
An in Scappoose, heavy snow caused the roof of McCuddy's Marina to collapse on the boats docked below, causing extensive damage and sinking at least one boat.
These are just a few examples of the many collapsing roofs and falling trees blamed on this latest storm that were reported to kgw.com by viewers.
State officials even had to close the McMinnville offices of the Oregon Department of Human Services because they are worried that heavy snow may have caused structural damage to the roof.
Agency director Bruce Goldberg has requested an inspection of the building before allowing employees and the public to re-enter. Anyone who needs assistance Tuesday from DHS in the McMinnville area should call Denise Venini in Dallas at 503-623-8118, ext.224.
