Notorious Oregon skinhead rearrested after prison release

03:38 PM PST on Thursday, December 20, 2007

By KGW Staff

One of the most well-known figures in the Northwest skinhead movement was rearrested in Oregon.

Kyle Brewster, 38, was one of three neo-Nazis who killed an Ethiopian immigrant back in 1988. He got out of prison in 2002, but officers say he violated parole by contacting a white supremacist group and went back in 2006.

Brewster was released again on Tuesday, despite having an outstanding warrant for the August beating of an Oregon prison guard.

The district attorney in Umatilla County where the attack allegedly occurred says Brewster beat guard Josh Mitchell while shouting racial slurs and filed a warrant for Brewster's arrest on December 12th. State Corrections officials say they saw no evidence of that warrant when they did a background check on Brewster the day before his release this week.

"The Department of Corrections has very strict procedures regarding the release of prisoners," said spokesperson Chane Griggs. "Those procedures were followed."

The Umatilla County District Attorney didn't return calls from KGW, but because of a sealed indictment, county officials hadn't realized what happened.

"We got a call from Umatilla County this week," said Sgt. Brian Schmautz of the Portland Police Bureau. Officers arrested Brewster a few hours after he was released.
