'Fake' cop was plain clothes deputy who created confusion
06:14 PM PST on Friday, December 21, 2007
BEAVERTON – Turns out, the sketch broadcast on television screens across Portland Thursday and Friday and described as a police impersonator was actually the real thing.
The Clackamas County sheriff's deputy saw himself on television and alerted authorities that he pulled the people over while working undercover in plain clothing.
According to sheriff's office spokesman Det. Jim Strovink, the deputy acted properly. He had his badge on his belt, displayed it and identified himself.
Strovink believes the deputy did not contact dispatch in Beaverton because his radio does not communicate with that system. He said that was probably a procedural error. He also said the deputy, who lives in Beaverton, will not pull over anyone in Beaverton anymore, although it is legal for him to conduct traffic stops outside his normal working jurisdiction.
The confusion began after two people reported getting stopped by a man impersonating a police officer in Beaverton earlier this month.
The first reported incident happened on December 4th, between 5:30 and 6 p.m. A woman said she was stopped in her vehicle on SW Conestoga, off SW 125th Street, by a man in a white or tan SUV that was unmarked. However, the vehicle had flashing red and blue lights in the grille.
The victim said the suspect told her she was stopped because of illegal fog lights. The traffic stop lasted for approximately five to ten minutes.
On December 20th, the Beaverton Police Department received a second impersonating a police officer complaint, said Beaverton Police Sgt. Paul Wandell.
On or around December 14th, a man driving on SW Conestoga, near SW 125th, was stopped by a suspect in an SUV with flashing blue and red lights.
The suspect, who matched the description of the man in the first incident, told the victim he was being stopped for illegal fog lights. The suspect did not ask the driver for identification and told the man he was being released with a warning.
