“Last night, I contacted the sheriff's office, they did not provide me with positive identification, but they did provide me with a number of details about the climber found in the cave. In particular, they identified a ring with my brother’s initials on it, which has led me and my family to conclude that the climber found in the cave yesterday was my brother, my brother Kelly," Frank James said Monday.
The body of Kelly James, 48, of Dallas, Texas, was removed by helicopter Monday from the 11,239-foot summit after rescue workers winched it from a snow cave about 300 feet down the steep north side.
Sheriff Joe Wampler of Hood River County said James had an "obvious" arm injury. Outlining a likely scenario, Wampler said the other climbers left their injured companion in the cave to find help, but had to dig a shallow cave of their own on a steep slope as the weather worsened.
Wampler confirmed Tuesday that James' injury was a dislocated shoulder.
During a news conference Monday morning, Hood River County Sheriff Joe Wampler said that Kelly James' body was found with a cell phone which was water-filled and no longer functioning. Once the body is recovered, authorities hope to determine whether Kelly James had been injured.
Kelly James was the same climber who placed a distress call to family a little more than a week ago. During that phone call he basically told his family that a descent from where he and the other two climbers were was impossible.
A military official involved in the search also confirmed the body is that of James, 48, of Dallas. The official asked not to be identified.
James' mother, Lou Ann Cameron, told the Associated Press she did not want to comment.
A Chinook helicopter Monday was preparing to fly to the snow cave, about 300 feet below Mount Hood's 11,239-foot summit, to recover the body, said Pete Hughes, a spokesman with the Hood River County Sheriff's Office.
The body remained on the mountain Sunday night because darkness made it too dangerous to retrieve, rescue workers said.
