Statement by Governor Ted Kulongoski on Police Officers Death
Gov. Ted Kulongoski on Saturday issued the following statement in response to the tragedy on Friday afternoon in Woodburn that took the lives of two members of law enforcement, and critically injured another.
“Oregon lost two brave and honorable men last night, and another was critically injured, in a tragedy that will forever be remembered in our state’s history.
“Together, these two men served Oregon for more than 30 years, putting their lives on the line daily so our citizens could be safe and secure in their homes and communities.
“Today I join the Oregon State Police, Woodburn Police Department and families of Senior Trooper William Hakim and Captain Tom Tennant in mourning the deaths of these two outstanding officers.
“I ask all Oregonians to join me in keeping the families and friends of Senior Trooper Hakim and Captain Tennant in our thoughts and prayers during this very difficult and sad time.
“I also ask Oregonians to join me in praying for the full recovery of Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell, who was critically injured during the incident.
“We owe a debt of gratitude for the men and women who protect our safety and liberties both at home and overseas. These three brave public servants have given their all to safeguard our state and communities, and for that we will all be forever grateful.
“I am confident the interagency investigation involving federal, state, county and local agencies will do everything they can to ensure anyone responsible for this act is brought to justice.”
