For an unknown reason, he turned into the car lane, directly into the path of the vehicle, said Gresham Police Sgt. Claudio Grandjean.
There were skid marks indicating the motorist tried to avoid hitting the cyclist, Grandjean said, but Jansen died at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and has been cooperating with investigators. Police do not yet know how fast the car was going. The driver was not cited.
The investigation continues.
