Family pleads for help to find man who shot firefighter on Hwy. 26
07:21 PM PST on Wednesday, December 12, 2007
ZIG ZAG, Ore. -- Firefighter Joshua Gehrke is in the intensive care center at Oregon Health & Sciences University Hospital following a road rage shooting, but he is in good spirits, according to his wife.
"I'm just happy my husband is alive, my brother-in-law is alive, that the kids are okay and at some point I might think about the person who did it, but not right now," Gerhke’s wife Lea Ann said. "It's a complete loss of innocence, feeling of trust... I don't think we'll be the same again."
Gehrke is able to sit up, his wife said. He still has part of a bullet lodged in his left forearm.
His family and coworkers hope the gunman who shot Gehrke and his brother-in-law will be caught and brought to justice.
"It’s going to be hard for a while around here, because we are like a family," said Steve Mcadoo, who works with Gehrke at Clackamas Fire District No. 1.

Gehrke is a six year veteran of the Clackamas County Fire Department.
The other man shot was Gehrke's brother-in-law, 33-year-old Joseph Langley. He was apparently treated and released from the hospital.
Gehrke and Langley were shot Monday night during a road rage incident.
Gehrke is expected to survive his wounds, but his future as a firefighter remains uncertain; it's too soon to tell whether he will be able to return to work.
He and his brother-in-law were driving home from Government Camp after a family snowboarding trip with Gehrke's nine-year-old son and the son's friend in the back of their van when the driver of another car began tailgating them.
The two men pulled over to let that car pass, but the other car stopped as well.
The two men got out of their van and confronted the tailgater, who police say then pulled out a gun and shot them.
After getting shot, the men ran back to the van and began to drive away westbound for a short distance before stopping at the Lolo Pass Road intersection to call 9-1-1.
The suspect also drove away, possibly westbound.
Both victims were taken to Oregon Health & Science University Hospital with serious wounds.
The two nine-year-old boys were not injured.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 30s, who was wearing a baseball cap. His car was a dark-colored import, possibly a Toyota Camry.
Authorities ask that any witnesses or other drivers who may have been victimized by the road rage driver in that area Monday night call Oregon State Police.
