Bush declares federal assistance for flood ravaged areas

President Bush has declared five counties in Oregon a federal disaster, clearing the way for federal aid.

Oregon Congressional members touring the hard-hit areas of the state received word on the approval Saturday.
On Sunday, federal officials said recovery assistance will alsobe given to individual residents and businesses in Columbia andTillamook counties. That will include money for temporary housing,jobless benefits, emergency food stamps and low-interest loans.
Help for residents and businesses in other counties is expected to be announced soon.
Residents can call (800) 621-FEMA for help.
Federal officials also announced an immediate $1 million to begin repairing Oregon roads.

Sen. Gordon Smith said the process for providing assistance to individuals hit by the storm will take longer but is expected to be approved.
Gov. Ted Kulongosi issued his request for a federal disaster declaration Wednesday.
Once a disaster is declared, federal money can help victims with home repair, legal services, medical care, crisis counseling and other needs.
FEMA officials also notify storm victims of benefits from other federal agencies, such as loans from the Small Business Administration.
