King City cracks down on golf cart drivers in town
08:23 AM PST on Thursday, December 4, 2008
KING CITY, Ore. -- Some King City residents will now have to find a way to get around town that doesn’t include driving their golf carts.
Some in King City use their golf carts for golfing. For others, it's the way they get around town. The new ordinance makes some people ineligible to drive golf-carts on city streets.
City officials unanimously passed the ordinance on Wednesday night. It prohibits residents from driving their golf carts on city streets if they are not eligible for a drivers license.
Carts will also need a use permit. There's no charge for that permit.
Joe Wilson was against the new ordinance. “We just like to have it stay the way it is and have people leave us alone and let us do our golf cart thing,” said Wilson.
“One of the difficulties is the misinformation and the misinterpretation and people getting excited about those things," neighbor Curtis Curtis said. "But when you just look at it, like I said, I don't have any problem with it.”
There is a public meeting Wednesday night where citizens can discuss the new ordinance. City council may even vote on the measure.
City Manager Dave Wells said it is about safety and also complying with state law. Residents cannot have had their driving privileges revoked and still drive a golf cart in King City.
Wells said if residents are still eligible to drive but simply do not have a license, it is still legal to drive a cart.
