Drunk, wrong way driver causes chain-reaction crash, police say
08:58 AM PST on Sunday, December 2, 2007
A drunk driver going the wrong way on Interstate-5 crashed head-on into another vehicle, which also caused another chain-reaction crash, police said.
Several people called 9-1-1 to report the wrong-way driver before the crash and an Oregon State trooper managed to spot her, but not in time to prevent the collision.
Police said Linda Olson, 49, of Cottage Grove, was driving a Pontiac Sunbird southbound in the northbound lanes near milepost 149 when she sideswiped a northbound pickup truck driven by Michael McLaurin, 55, of The Dalles. Then, after sideswiping the pickup, Olson crashed head-on with a car driven by Jeremy Linn, 20, of Cottage Grove.
A fourth car also rear-ended the pickup truck but left the scene before emergency responders arrived, police said.
Olson was transported by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
McLaurin and his wife, Linda, 55, escaped without injury.
Linn and his passenger Misty Loweless, 28, of Cottage Grove, were driven by ambulance to Sacred Heart Medical Center where they were treated and released for minor injuries.
Olson faces charges including DUI, assault, recklessly endangering other people and reckless driving.
The crash happened just before 7 p.m. Saturday night in the northbound lanes of I-5, about thirteen miles north of Sutherlin, in Douglas County.
I-5 was closed at the crash scene for about three hours during the investigation.
