MILWAUKIE, Ore. -- Two people were hurt when a driver plowed into a sporting goods store Monday afternoon near Milwaukie.

Clackamas County deputies said the Ford Explorer crashed through the concrete wall of the Big 5 Sporting Goods Store on SE McLoughlin Boulvard, careening through merchandise racks before stopping about 50 feet inside.

One woman was taken to a Portland hospital and another man had minor injuries while trying to get out of the way.

Deputies think the woman was hit by flying debris that caused possible pelvic injuries during the crash.

Driver 83-year-old Peter Day of Oregon City was unhurt.

He told officers he recalled hitting what he thought was the brakes while trying to park, but he was likely revving the gas pedal, according to deputies.

Day told deputies he was recently hospitalized for a neuropathy-related condition.

"The inside of this store looks like a war zone with all the extensive damage and huge hole created in the concrete wall,” an unidentified deputy said.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
