Oregon officials need more time to decide adoption dispute

SALEM, Ore. -- A state official has asked for more time to resolve the fate of 2-year-old Gabriel Allred.

Angela and Steve Brandt took custody of Gabriel after a court terminated the parental rights of his biological parents. They want to adopt him.
BACKGROUND: Family fights foster boy's deportation
A state committee recommended sending him to the Mexican state of Puebla to live with his grandmother.
Governor Ted Kulongoski asked Bryan Johnston of the Oregon Department of Human Services to work out a solution.
Johnston said Friday it will take more than the two weeks that the governor originally specified to give everybody involved a chance to discuss what's best for Gabriel.
