The search expanded into Oregon's I-5 corridor and the Coast Range for a missing San Francisco family that was last seen in Portland Thanksgiving weekend.

S.F. detectives said James Kim, his wife Kati, and their young children, 4-year-old Penelope and 7-month-old Sabine, took a trip to Seattle for the holiday.

They were supposed to return home on Tuesday, but co-workers became concerned Wednesday when the couple did not show up for appointments.

On Friday the Oregon Army National Guard launched a helicopter search of an area in Southern Oregon between Grants Pass and Gold Beach, where the family was thought to be headed when they disappeared. Earlier, Portland Police issued a bulletin to officers throughout the I-5 corridor and agencies on the Coast with information in the case.

Due to recent storms, including snow at the higher elevations, crews started  searching an area of the Bear Camp Road. Curry County deputies were able to drive approximately 7 miles up the road before it became too treacherous due to snow and a solid layer of ice, deputies said. Cooc County deputies also helped search the remote area.

Josephine County deputies called for a Sno-Cat to respond, since there were about 20 miles of road that police were not able to cover.

The Kim family also contracted helicopter crews to search.

James Kim is a senior editor at CNET and hosts the web site's popular Crave blog. Police said friends and family knew them to usually keep in daily contact.

According to Det. Angela Martin of the San Francisco Police Dept., the family had lunch with a friend in Portland on Saturday between 2-3 p.m., then left to travel to Gold Beach on the southern Oregon Coast.

San Francisco Police said the family made two phone calls to a Gold Beach hotel that afternoon, the second call at 5:45 p.m. On that second call, the family reportedly asked the hotel clerk to leave a key outside since they would be arriving late that night. Portland investigators said they thought the family did leave the Portland area.

That phone call was the last reported contact with the family. The Gold Beach hotel did leave keys out for the Kim Family but the keys were still there the next morning.

According to the Kim's cellular phone provider, the phone was last used after the lunch in Portland. Calls to the Kim's cell phone later Saturday went straight to voice mail.
