A Salem-area man was taken into custody Saturday morning after causing an accident that killed a woman on Friday.
Oregon State Police
The accident happened just before 5:30 p.m. Friday on Highway 22W near the intersection of Oak Grove Road NW, near milepost 20 west of Salem.
A police investigation concluded that a silver 2000 Ford Mustang driven by 27-year-old Martin Martinez-Aguilar of Salem was in the center left turn lane when he attempted to cross both eastbound lanes.
Martinez-Aguilar’s vehicle was struck from behind by an eastbound Saturn driven by 52-year-old Barbara Jean Bier of Dallas.
The impact forced the Mustang onto the eastbound shoulder and the Saturn to veer into the westbound lanes where it crashed head-on into a Ford F150 pickup driven by 54-year-old William Lee Wiedenmann of Dallas.
Wiedenmann was not injured but Bier was pronounced dead at the scene.
Martinez-Aguilar and an unidentified passenger were taken to Salem Hospital for treatment.
Martinez-Aguilar was later arrested and booked into the Polk County Jail.
He has been charged with criminally negligent homicide, DUII, assault in the second degree, assault in the fourth degree, reckless driving, and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.
