Construction company fined for accident in Pearl District
07:39 AM PST on Monday, November 24, 2008
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The general contractor for a $60 million condo building in the trendy Pearl District in downtown Portland has been fined $1,500 after several construction workers were injured.
Andersen Construction has already appealed the fine by the Oregon office of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
OSHA officials say a worker was drilling into a slab of concrete and hit a 480-volt conductor in the basement of the Encore Condominum project during the final stages of construction in August.
The worker suffered burns and other workers in the basement suffered smoke inhalation.
Investigators determined that Andersen Construction violated safety rules because there were no signs or markers such as spray paint to indicate that a buried conductor posed a threat.
