Insurance denied for family at bottom of house slide area

PORTLAND -- The owner of the home located at the bottom of the slide that left seven Southwest Portland homes damaged or destroyed got the final word from his insurance company Friday -- And the news was not good.

Yuan Chow told KGW that Farmer’s Insurance rejected his insurance claim, so he won’t get any help covering the damage costs.

Chow talks about insurance frustrations

Chow said he was extremely upset when he heard the news.

The Chow family’s home was located at the bottom of the slide. The house at the top crashed into their home, leaving it permanently uninhabitable.

The city wants the homeowners to take out what’s left of the damaged homes with bulldozers and clean up the slide area. But the Chows won’t be under any pressure to take on the project right away, because the hillside remains unstable at the moment.

The slide began at 6438 SW Burlingame Place, when the ground below the home became unstable, causing it to slide down a steep hill and crash into two other homes below.

The homeowners were working with structural engineers and inspectors to find out what, if anything, the insurance companies will do for them.

Some of the homeowners were warned not even to go into their homes to collect belongings after the slide.

And even some of the nearby neighbors were afraid to return to their homes, wondering if the hillside could give way in other locations, especially during Portland's rainy season.

One owner who was barred from returning to his damaged home spoke with kgw.com. “I’m still not allowed in my home. I’m feeling very unsettled -- more now than before,” he said. “It’s really starting to sink in, what happened.”

Other residents said their only hope was getting a large settlement from their insurance company so they can rebuild.
